The Royal Alfred Lodge was consecrated in 1861. The choice of name appears to have emanated from a wish to commemorate H.R.H. Prince Alfred, the second son of Queen Victoria.
It was stated that the Lodge was established for professional men. Hence the five candidates, who were initiated on the day of the consecration, were two advocates, two solicitors and one banker.
